Batteries are empty from the box. I am assuming the unit was powered on prior to shipping. I had some spare batteries so I unscrewed the 4 case screws and separated the front from the back. When removing the CR2032 batteries, I also had to remove the screws that attach the circuit board to the front of the case. Because when the battery slides out to the open side of the battery compartment, it rests against the inside edge of the plastic cover. You will need to lift the circuit board slightly to release the battery pack, which can then be removed. The rest of the multimeter works fine. It has a good slim size and a very easy to read display. For the price it is good value for money.
