Solid. I thought it was plastic. NO! Steel with a good rubber surface and a damn good screw clamp. Very reliable. Just tighten it until the surfaces are "flush". they may/should be slightly distorted. And not on the "curve" at the end of the tub. The price is worth it. looks like a boot pad or something. This baby isn't going anywhere, of course a steel tub is better. LIKELY required. I actually saw a review that said a fiberglass bathtub cracks - I'm pretty sure that's true. Especially when dressed "right". I also saw a review that said it slid down the side of the tub. Yes I think if it wasn't fully lowered and NOT tightened it would be like you're about to climb Everest. HE SHOULD be sitting up all the way and BE VERY HERE.
