It's good if you understand its features

I realized that this device is fine once I understood its little quirks. It's a little embarrassing, but the problems are solvable. First to hard drives. I have found that my device loves Memorex DVD-RW 2x and Fujifilm DVD-R 8x. Once you've found a drive brand that works reliably, stick with it. Second, about the record. I have found that the device sometimes has trouble reading DVD-RW discs that are 100% filled with data. For example, if I recorded 2 hours of video at 2 hour speed (SP), the hard drive is clearly full. Sometimes when inserting a disc, the device would not read the disc properly and gave the error message "The disc cannot be played or written". Even after reformatting the drive I sometimes got this error message. As a result, I throw away the hard drive and put in a new one. This went on for quite a while until I found that if I adjusted the write speed so that the disk wasn't full, the problem didn't reoccur. So if I want to record 2 hours of video, I set the recording speed to 4 hours (LP). The disk is only half full of data and the machine loads the disk reliably. When recording with a timer and using the AUTO speed setting, set the recording time so that the disc does not fill up. So if you are recording a 2 hour video at AUTO timer speed, set the device to record for 2 1/2 hours. This will force it to use 4 hour speed (LP) instead of 2 hour speed (SP) and the disk will not be full. Next the remote control. I agree this is bad design. I haven't found a solid solution to this problem. However, I have found that the remote works best when I hold it on my lap and tilt the front of the remote slightly up toward the car. And I don't sit too far from the car. But sometimes I still have to press the button a few times before the machine recognizes the command. For me it's not a big problem. In general, having understood the small features of this machine, I am very satisfied with it. I wish it had an S-Video output instead of composite video, but I found the picture quality to be very good when I turned on progressive scan. The coaxial digital audio output plays very well with my 5.1 home theater audio receiver. The standard RCA audio outputs are connected to my TV and work fine. I also have a large VHS collection that I want to transfer to DVD, so I went with the DVD-VHS combo. There are others, but I chose the DVR-300 because it has a coaxial digital audio output instead of optical (one of my 5.1 receiver's optical inputs is already shared by my satellite receiver's optical output). I hope it helps. I was disappointed with the machine at first, but at least I can make reliable records now. Roger
