Today's humidifier market is dominated by inferior Asian-made ultrasonic devices. While cheap and probably healthier than previously known evaporative models, I don't think ultrasonic models are healthy. Definitely moisturize. In fact, they rehydrate very quickly. They also release minerals into the air (especially if you have hard water) which you then inhale and fall on everything as a fine dust. For those who have followed the recent talc-related lawsuits, I believe these ultrasonic humidifiers pose no risk. You're still breathing minerals. Steam humidifiers have always been the best, which is why they are in demand in all home systems. The nature of boiling water removes impurities. However, these minerals are still a problem as they coat the heating element and require regular maintenance. A pre-cleaning system is typically used for entire residential units. The same can be done with distilled water in a steam humidifier. Or you can simply take care of the regular cleaning. The hard water pad has helped me a lot so far and cleaning wasn't too difficult. I've had whole house and portable steam humidifiers for years. I just went to ultrasound because I couldn't find any real vapor. Luckily, after a year of ultrasonics and a lot of worries at the beginning of winter, I went in search of a real steam system and found it. Yes, it is louder than ultrasonic. it's boiling water what you hear. However, it produces healthy and clean humidity that really fills the air with comfortable vapor at the right pace. You can keep it low and not over-wet the area around the device. In general I am very satisfied. If you want the quietest and cheapest humidifier, go for an ultrasonic humidifier. However, make sure you don't have any allergies or other respiratory issues as you will be breathing in mineral dust throughout the day when using it. Although the market has not labeled them as unsafe, I can tell you that my allergy and asthma symptoms have greatly reduced since switching to this steam humidifier!
