Review on πŸ”¨ Nordstrand Flattening Stone: A Game-Changer for Re-Leveling Waterstones by David Elam

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Flat, fairly quick to cut

I checked the flatness of this stone by holding a metal ruler against it and looking at the light source. I don't see any optical problems, it's flat enough for my purposes. I used it to smooth 3 water stones on either side for a total of 6 sides. The stones are exactly the same size as the leveling stone and the worst had a 1-2mm indentation in the middle. It took about 20 minutes of work on each side. Others (which were originally flatter) took 5-10 minutes per side. If you do this after each sharpening session, it shouldn't take more than a minute or two per stone. I didn't notice any abrasion on the whetstone so I think it will be good for years to come. Channels in the stone help collect worn parts and the stone is easy to clean. All in all a great product at a great price, I can only recommend it.

Pros
  • Traditional technique using modern Japanese manufacturing techniques
Cons
  • Slightly wrinkled
