Flat, fairly quick to cut

I checked the flatness of this stone by holding a metal ruler against it and looking at the light source. I don't see any optical problems, it's flat enough for my purposes. I used it to smooth 3 water stones on either side for a total of 6 sides. The stones are exactly the same size as the leveling stone and the worst had a 1-2mm indentation in the middle. It took about 20 minutes of work on each side. Others (which were originally flatter) took 5-10 minutes per side. If you do this after each

Pros
  • Traditional technique using modern Japanese manufacturing techniques
Cons
  • Slightly wrinkled

I've used better hand tools

Overall, this is a fairly expensive silicon carbide whetstone. The speed didn't impress me either. You can surely find a cheaper one here on the site that will get the job just as efficiently. If you are determined to use this I would suggest buying some loose silicon carbide sand (or stone tumble sand) as it will make leveling much faster. It is also noteworthy that I have posted this review before, but this Amazon continues to selectively refuse to publish it. This is remarkable for several…

Hands down the best leveling stone for the money!

This thing is amazing! It looks like a hard, rough brick. I flattened and flattened 6 stones that were horribly deformed and lost less than 1mm in height. Even though it's grooved, hard, and rough, it still acts slowly enough not to damage softer stones. This does mean, however, that hard rocks take a LONG time to level, but you should take a few minutes to smooth them out after/before each sharpening session so the rock doesn't reach that point. I spent almost $100 on a different alignment…

Pros
  • Make ingots, oil stones, water stones like new
Cons
  • No instructions
