Review on πŸ”¨ Nordstrand Flattening Stone: A Game-Changer for Re-Leveling Waterstones by Kyle Miller

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Hands down the best leveling stone for the money!

This thing is amazing! It looks like a hard, rough brick. I flattened and flattened 6 stones that were horribly deformed and lost less than 1mm in height. Even though it's grooved, hard, and rough, it still acts slowly enough not to damage softer stones. This does mean, however, that hard rocks take a LONG time to level, but you should take a few minutes to smooth them out after/before each sharpening session so the rock doesn't reach that point. I spent almost $100 on a different alignment. Stones because they wear out too quickly. I'll be amazed if I spend that money ENTIRELY on these stones in the next 5 years. I advise you to let the stone do all the work for you. Apply light pressure by leveling the entire block (forward-backward and circular motions). Keep the whetstone wet, but you can use it wet or dry. From what I can tell, soaking with a whetstone is a bit slower but more controlled. Dry running speeds up the process, but not by much.

Pros
  • Make ingots, oil stones, water stones like new
Cons
  • No instructions
