I personally find the sensor useless as I have a Kenmore which also has a similar sensor and it was a terrible machine. Basically, it determines the amount of dust that passes through the head. But if your vacuum can't pick up any dust at all, all you'll see is a green light. I once again vacuumed a room with the Sharks right after using the Kenmore to clean the room and I couldn't believe how full the dust bin in my Sharks was. Well, I can't prove that's the case with IRIS, but I would think the sensor is just plain useless too. I was too lazy to tidy up the room and couldn't believe my bed and upholstered bed frame were completely clean according to IRIS. In addition, the instructions specifically state that the vacuum cleaner is ONLY suitable for mattresses and CANNOT BE USED. IT LIKES UPHOLSTERED FURNITURE. I planned to clean my sofa and chairs. I don't think I should do that even though it's listed as a mattress and furniture vacuum.
