Many users of the new Macbook Air have reported problems when using an external monitor. After reading reviews of various adapters, I decided to use my Apple TV with an HDMI output to connect to an old VGA monitor. As long as you first connect the USB port to a power source to troubleshoot your Apple TV "Low Power HDMI" issue and confirm that your computer is connected to the Apple TV, you're good to go. I connected my Macbook to an Apple TV/monitor for several hours and the connection was solid with good quality video.
