As for ease of installation, I had trouble initially as I've never played around with a water heater. I spent a lot of time carefully studying the situation and taking photos for assembly. Objectively, however, these are just a few screws and wire connections to assemble a thermopile. I had to take it apart the next day because I made a mistake. The second installation was easy and took less than 45 minutes. So if you're a decent jack of all trades, do it yourself. I saved myself at least $150. I also replaced the gas valve as I didn't know what the problem was. It cost $126. I spent a total of about $160 on my heater which is 7.5 years old and I have good reason to believe it will last another 7.5 years, especially since the water I drained from the tank had no rust. . The total time required is approx. 5 hours, including internet research and shopping time as well as work. It would cost at least $400 if done by a trained professional. I'd love to suggest better photos, but hopefully they help some.
