I bought this for a travel kit to use when I'm off the beaten track. Other reviews list most of the problems: - The battery cover is very annoying (difficult to open, then difficult to close). but it was a mystery to solve - battery installation isn't obvious (but look closely, inside is a print showing + and -) - may work for a short time and then not at all. I tinned 2 wires and soldered them to the connectors - then the device turned off. I checked the original batteries (down to 1.45v after those 2 quick uses), they should still work, but I replaced the new batteries (1.57v) just in case. No change, the tip was still icy. The LED and light worked well but the tip didn't get hot. I figured there must be a short in the tip and I noticed where the tip was bent (small indentations on the outer sleeve that held the tip) and that the tip seemed a bit loose. So I crimped the tip to make it fit better - success! I added 2 more wires, tinned and connected! Obviously the tip was slightly defective so I'll try contacting the manufacturer - I wish something like this would work more than once. The bottom line is that you can get it working with a few wires when you're ready to debug it. However, this is not included in the travel set, as there is no point in taking an unreliable tool with you. And getting it to work is harder than pulling out a real soldering iron and sticking it in the wall.
