On a whim I bought this for my daughter as a birthday present. This gift became an instant hit. It was easy to set up and she ran and sang and played music. It was so much fun that her older siblings came along too. The children played with the microphone for about 4 hours over two days. It was easy to pair, adjust volume, skip songs and set up an echo effect too. I was willing to give this product a 5 star rating. One thing we noticed is that when the mic tells you it's ready to pair, connected, etc., it's literally someone recording their voice and reporting the mic's status. And the recording has a very strong accent. I immediately thought it was cheaply made, but hey, at least the kids liked it. Unfortunately my daughter dropped the microphone and the part you are talking about is cut off. I'm not talking about a big fall. It was a 2-3 foot drop and completely random. Luckily the cable connecting the microphone to the base was intact, so we glued the top back on and let the kids play with it after the glue dried. The next day the charging cable to the mic broke which isn't a big deal as we have tons of charging cables. However, the microphone fell again. This time not only the top part came loose, but also the cable connecting the base and the microphone. We decided that the microphone was no longer recoverable, although we thought we could still reuse the speaker and microphone. If this product lasts more than a few days I would give it a 5x rating. What worries me is that he just can't take it. My kids have played with the Rockband mic and other karaoke machines and they haven't broken in years. On the other hand, it did very little damage. If you want a few hours of fun or are very mellow, buy one and have fun with the microphone. If you buy it for small children, I advise you to buy something stronger.
