Fantastic for what it is

I called it 'Fantastic just as it is' for a reason. I am a lifelong radio amateur. I have lots of them. Most have cost me over $100, most of them are multi band and the best radios out there. CCrane, Sangean, TecSun, Grundig, Sony. These are all brands you will find in my house and I would say they are all 4-5 star radios. Radio. I would like to clarify this for other radio amateurs. But I still consider it a 4 star radio so read on and see why. I only bought this radio for baseball games. I wanted a small, lightweight radio that would fit in my shirt pocket so I could listen to the game's radio broadcast while I was watching at the stadium. This radio is perfect for that. It's small, light and sounds great with headphones (not included). I really can't ask for more in this regard. I've been using the CC Witness for this for a few years, but I'm not a fan of lugging around an expensive device and there are a lot of not-great things about Witness as a radio. The screen is large and easy to read, which is very important when you wear reading glasses. I don't have to and don't have to worry about points when using it. The controls are simple and easy to use. The buttons initially feel a bit stiff and cheap, but this wears off over time as they wear down over time. The battery life is very good for AAA batteries. Setup is simple, and while you can't change the pitch, frequencies are well isolated so there's no spillover or blurring. If you like presets, there are about 20. respectively on AM and FM. Far more than I've ever used, but it's nice to know they're there. Overall, this is a really basic AM/FM radio that's easy to use and has great reception. But not everything is so good. Read more: This radio sounds terrible without headphones. It has a small speaker and sounds very, very tinny. It's enough when needed, but I think I'll take a spare pair of headphones with me in case of an emergency because it's too hard for me to listen for a long time, especially with one voice. I was very surprised that it didn't include headphones for this reason as every cheap radio seems to come with a cheap pair even if they are useless. Not really negative, just an observation. The battery cover is difficult to remove. For that reason, and because of the plastic it's made of, this is one of those devices where you think you're going to break the lid if you take it off. You don't, but it seems so! And that last detail might be crucial for some: the strap is actually an antenna. So if you're one of those people who wants to cut the top, don't. When you do this, the radio will be muted. I'm not sure how useful it is to have a strap instead of an antenna, it seems like it puts unnecessary strain on the antenna, but I'm also not a fan of radios that use the headphone cable as an antenna. Since the cable is a loop, I'm not sure if it's just a VHF antenna or if it's also an AM antenna. If you can live with that and are just looking for a basic portable AM/FM radio, this is an amazing deal. I look forward to using it this spring and summer when baseball starts. I will probably use it in the future as this radio is so small and light that it's easy to take with you anywhere.
