Review on Cangshan TN1 Series Denali Maple Knife Block Set: Superior Swedish Sandvik 14C28N Steel Forged 14-Piece Set with Magnetic Block by Kim Major

Revainrating 5 out of 5

An exceptionally sharp, strange piece of wood.

Got these as a late wedding present for my friends who love to cook almost more than eat, they burn or overripe. Sorry D&J if you're reading this! The set is very good and here is the high point of my thoughts and hers: What we like: - Spicy. Almost dangerously sharp. If you are not careful and are used to thin cutlery you could end up cutting yourself and you won't feel it at first as it slides easily through almost anything. You may need to re-evaluate your cutting skills in the kitchen as they are SHARP! - Good balance. The full tail and comfortable but not bulky handles give them a balance point right in front of your middle finger when using the blade grip. In case you missed it like I said before. Attractive block of wood. Good finishes, natural wood, recessed or closed slats combine appearance and practicality. good weight Some weight so you know you're using a tool, but not so much that it's unwieldy. What we missed: - Strange arrangement of the blocks. The blocks are actually three separate blocks held together by internal hidden magnets. (I have my nail clippers hanging from one of the magnets in the picture) What's weird is that the beveled tips don't line up when aligned. Putting it against a wall will tilt the center block to the side, with one side block facing you and the other facing away from you. You almost have to push the blocks apart so the knives are on the far side. We tried to see if it's modular, with magnets on either side, but no. Unusual angles are made on purpose. Overall, this SHARP knife set is exquisite and well-suited to the home cook who genuinely enjoys using the right very, very sharp cutlery for the job. Also, they are sharp. (Full disclosure, both I and J got cut cooking salmon and roasted root vegetables one night; we're used to old, dirty, dull knives!)

Pros
  • There's something to it
Cons
  • Minor issues
