Security is worth it. It can be intimidating for the casual handyman to climb tall stairs that crunch against the gutters. But this mount provides solid support and traction (and I've been on uneven ground too) and has made me a lot more confident when climbing and descending from about 12 feet. This is especially useful when you need to reach outside corners that protrude beyond the frame of the house. If your shingles hang slightly over the gutter, it may be difficult to push them into the gutter (the attached picture shows this protrusion). Because the bar insert is unthreaded, you cannot pull the bar to lower the stabilizer bar as the bar will just pop out of the hole. So I had to lean the ladder under the trough against the outer wall, climb up and use my hands to push the stabilizer into the trough, then climb down and put the ladder on top of it. It was an effort, but it worked. So an improvement would be to cut a hole for the rod and sell the threaded rod to go with it.
