Several reviewers report that there is no beep. When I hold the thermometer a few millimeters from my ear and press the "on" button, a very brief and very, very quiet beep occurs. But, further from my ear, such as when the thermometer is in my mouth, the beep cannot be heard at all, even in a silent room. The instructions say that the reading is complete when a beep is heard and when the "F" or "C" stops blinking. Alas, one cannot see the F nor the C when the thermometer is in one's mouth. Maybe hearing the beep or seeing the cessation of flashing isn't really necessary: the thermometer completes its reading in just a few seconds, so leaving it one's mouth for 30 seconds will surely result in a completed reading. As to accuracy, out of six readings, it read the same temperature three times and each of the other three readings differed among themselves. I'll probably keep the thing, anyway, and use one of two bulb thermometers when I want to take a reading I can trust. Alas.
