Review on πŸ–ŒοΈ The Army Painter Most Wanted Brush Set: Synthetic Toray & Natural Red Sable, Insane Detail, Ideal for Wargames & Miniature Painting by Sasha Hsiao

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Two average and one excellent.

After using this set for a while I realized that this set is a mixed bag. First, two of the three brushes (Crazy Detail and Shelf) are triangular in shape. The small dry brush is a standard brush with a round handle. The triangular brush handles serve two purposes: first, they're more comfortable to hold with a standard pen grip, and second, they don't roll on the table if you lay them horizontally. The Insane Detail brush has a very fine point, but unfortunately tends to fishtail or split the point into two lines when drawing a brush stroke. You can easily snap it back into the exact shape, but it will repeat this behavior from time to time, even with minimal pressure. This is very annoying with details like the eyes. I've tried thinning the paint down a bit and it helps a little but not enough. Also, since the tip is very small, the paint tends to dry on the brush before you even put it down. It's not really this brush's fault, just an observation. The little brush isn't big or terrible, it's definitely average. I've used similarly short synthetic brushes and haven't noticed any noticeable difference. Actually there is not much to say about it. It holds its shape quite well and being synthetic it allows for some tinkering with it than a natural hair brush. This is useful as dry brushing itself makes the brushes a bit rough. Shelf is the red marten (Wiesel; Kolinsky) natural hair brush that shines in this set. I've used it extensively and it retains good sharpness and doesn't tend to chip or tail. I haven't had a chance to compare it to Kolinsky's gold standard sable brushes (W&N Series 7, Raphael 8404) but compared to the cheap hobby brushes I've bought it's excellent. This is a very good size for covering small miniatures like Warhammer infantry or D&D style figures. The point is suitable for most applications, except for very small eyes. All in all a very easy to apply brush. Overall the one Regiment brush in my pack is very good - quality can vary from pack to pack but in my experience the Regiment brush is an easy recommendation, especially for the price.

Pros
  • HANDLES WITH FUNCTION. The Detailing Brush features our signature triangular handle, providing a comfortable grip during long late-night painting sessions. We've equipped the small drybrush with a rounded handle to make it easier to grip when applying broad strokes to your favorite models.
Cons
