Direwolf and Sabretooth

I bought Direwolf (Midnight) here at Revain and Sabretooth (Bonesaw) at Walmart. Unfortunately, they are not created equal. First, replace the batteries immediately, even if they appear to be working properly. I had some issues with the Sabretooth correctly responding to touches (even when the correct areas were activated, it often didn't), and a quick battery swap fixed all of the issues. While the included batteries seem decent, just swap them out; The extra responsiveness goes a long way. I would say that with fresh batteries the accuracy of the answers is around 80-90% while Sabretooth's packed batteries only give it an accuracy of around 30%. As for the Fingerlings themselves, the Direwolf has far more sounds and reactions than the Sabretooth. I was very disappointed to find that Sabretooth tends to repeat the same sound over and over again (a certain sound in Untamed mode and a different sound in Tamed mode). There's very little variety, and even different interactions, like hand clapping or face slapping, will likely evoke the same sound. This gets repetitive quickly and sucks the fun and life out of the toy. On the other hand, they did a great job with the Direwolf. No sound is repeated too often, and most interactions elicit unique (or at least mostly unique) responses. It's painfully clear that they've spent more time with Direwolf than with Sabretooth; Even as a big cat lover, I have to admit that I prefer the Direwolf because of the additional sounds. It's just more fun to play with. However, the Direwolf has one problem: a microphone. Sabretooth is much more responsive to sounds, while Direwolf has trouble with sounds unless they are very loud. To cite an example, Sabretooth consistently responds to noises at a normal volume, while Direwolf requires me to speak loud and close for each response. It also complicates the interaction between them. These are my first fingerlings so I don't know how long they should interact for, but Sabretooth is great at responding to the direwolf when it's making noise. On the other hand, Direwolf almost never responds to Sabretooth; The Sabretooth just isn't loud enough to activate Direwolf's bad microphone. Speaking of loudness, I'm impressed with the loudness of these toys. They aren't too loud like many toys; Again, I would compare it to the level of a normal inner voice or something. A volume control would have been useful, but at this price point, it's hard to complain. For parents who buy these for their kids, they most likely won't be loud enough to be disruptive while driving or at home for any length of time. It would probably also be a good idea to put them on public display in some places, like shopping or maybe a family-friendly restaurant. For example, you can be too loud in a waiting room or other quiet area if that helps you understand. Overall I give these two four stars. They both have issues of their own, Sabretooth tends to be worse, but they're still fun toys. Despite the lack of variety in Sabretooth, I can't say I regret buying it for $15. Just know that despite the mic issue (assuming it's common to all direwolf fingerlings, not just me), direwolf is even better overall.
