Review on πŸ’ͺ ZINUS SmartBase Super Heavy Duty Mattress Foundation: 2200lbs Weight Capacity, Underbed Storage & Sturdy Steel Frame - Twin Size by Tiffany Santos

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Sturdy but not as strong as suggested

I bought this frame because I'm quite a tall and HEAVY person. I needed something strong, durable and affordable. Finding a new bed and frame turned out to be a lot more expensive than I expected and my funds are NOT endless (unfortunately for me) and I don't have that elusive "money tree" that has bills of various denominations in grow my backyard. , or even my front yard for that matter (again, unfortunately for me). So when I came across this article, a sturdy metal bed frame that claims to hold and support up to 4400 pounds. and since it's lightweight and portable, and also easy to assemble with virtually no tools, let's just say I loved it. When I found that this item was only $129.99 WITH FREE SHIPPING (as a "Prime" item) and I knew I wasn't being ripped off because it was a completed Revain order, I went from mere excitement to ecstasy. I bought the item and it arrived within two days. The bed frame was exactly as described, although the square metal tubes used to make the frame and legs were thinner (smaller) than I imagined. The stand was easy to unpack, set up and move as described and no tools were required for assembly. All you have to do is unzip it and deploy it. This frame is perfect for hiking and using a queen size air mattress. It's so easy and convenient. Four years later, almost five, and I'm writing this review right now. I felt like I should write this because of .flaw? I think I would call it for want of a better word. You see, the framework is strong. VERY DURABLE. It will hold tremendous weight. However, remember when I mentioned that the square metal tube seemed a bit flimsy or small to me? That's how it is! Also, the locking system used to hold the legs in place for this prop is poorly designed or I would say not strong enough. Hooks (tabs) do not remain hooked, but unscrew and loosen. In this case, the frame can wobble slightly. This movement loosens the weld that holds the frame and legs together. Also, the corners need extra support in the form of extra legs. Each corner has only a small thin leg. This is insufficient and will cause the corner (if significant weight is placed there) to sag. Over time, the frame weakens and begins to collapse. These are usually very lightly welded leg braces (a very long and thin piece of square tubing) that run from one leg to the other to keep them from moving. Once those rods start cracking at the welds, that's it. The frame is now compromised, and unless you take it to the weld shop to be re-welded (and strengthen it significantly with a new, heavier metal square stock), it only is a matter of time before the legs detach from the frame and the bed falls to the floor. Don't get me wrong, this is still a very good buy. Everything I said took almost five years. For the price I paid ($129.99 at the time of purchase - January 2014) it has held up well given my weight, roughly placed my kids on the bed (you know how kids are) and boxed twice and moved, it turned out very well . Now I have to buy another one of these frames as this one has given me almost everything it can do but this time I know what needs strengthening so I'm going to take it to the weld shop and weld on a heavier metal square stem. on which will replace the original metal leg supports and I will be reinforcing the welds throughout the frame as well as welding the latches (metal hooks) in place. This should solve all problems. Even with the added cost of doing so, it will still be significantly cheaper than any other frame I could buy that can support the same weight and still be lightweight, portable, and easy to assemble. It will even be cheaper (and easier) than buying plywood and materials to build your own frame. I only gave it FOUR STARS because I felt that if the manufacturer had used a larger square shaft and designed a better (more secure) locking system (hook) they would have added a few extra legs to support the corners (an extra leg). . at every corner), it would never slowly fall apart and need to be replaced. I hope this helps anyone and everyone reading this.
