Three and a half stars rounded to four

There's nothing particularly good or bad here, but there is one element that I feel is critical to a battery powered emergency response device that's missing. There is no indicator of the lithium battery charge level. There's a low battery LED indicator, but even that doesn't give you an indication of how many minutes of radio listening you have left. no charge until full. However, I decided to give it a try to see how effective it is. Starting with a dead battery, I let the sun charge the radio for a full day from sunrise to sunset. This test was conducted in early May in the northern mid-latitudes on a cloudless day. The next day I turned on the radio to see how long it would last on that charge. The radio was on for 3 hours. After that, the low battery indicator stayed off, which means the battery is not dead. Since in an emergency you will run the radio with short pulses to receive the weather forecast, either during the news hour or after receiving an emergency notification, this test implies that the radio can only be used with solar power. I've also tried the crank method and found it might work for the desperate, but I would never use it any other way. It's too bulky for regular use. It is also possible to use a walkie-talkie with conventional dry batteries (not included). The reception is disappointing. The car radio picks up about a dozen stations here in the middle of nowhere. This radio will reliably pick up only one FM station - a local station that went offline during a recent storm. The weather group collects the weather forecast. The AM band catches a station - oddly one such weather station that I didn't know existed. The AM band will likely pick up more at night. This is not the first choice for those who live far from cities or even big cities like us. Overall, I'd give it three and a half stars, rounded up to four, due to the unexpected but welcome performance of the solar array.
