If you're still thinking about it, just buy

I've used some very sharp lenses in the past - Canon 85mm f/1.2L, Canon 135mm f/2L, first Sigma 50mm 1.4 (not Art). They were all impressive when I used them (especially the 135 and 50) but I was completely unprepared for how sharp/contrasty the Sigma 24-35mm's images were. As a big fan of primes for both image quality and low-light performance, I don't typically shoot with zoom, but 24, 28, and 35 are some of my favorite focal lengths. Despite the impressive reviews and performance of the MTF Sigma 24-35, I really didn't think it could live up to the hype, but I took it anyway. I was dead wrong; In terms of performance, this Sigma is really more like three primes than a zoom, and it backs that up with very good performance. When the lens arrived I was about to walk my dog so I dropped it. my 5D Mark III and took a few shots wide open (f/2 - f/2.8) on the assumption that these would be just one-off test shots and I'd have to stop at f/4 or so to get satisfactory results . Imagine my surprise when I uploaded the pictures and was amazed at how good they looked without any post processing. Its design is reliable; as it should be, with all its weight. The focus and zoom rings are very well dampened. I used Leica lenses and while they feel very different, the focus and zoom rings are buttery smooth but dialed in with precision. In other words, they move easily and still stop exactly where you want them to. The only downside I can think of is that this is a massive lens. I don't really care; Heavy cameras have never been a problem for me, even though I shoot all day. I've shot some pretty sketchy locations over the year at 70-200 f/2.8 and it all seems easy by comparison (I need to stay in shape for other entirely unrelated reasons too, so anything helps). However, those who are more sensitive to weight should perhaps shy away from this monster. There's no other way to put it: this thing is deadly sharp and will stand up to most comparable prime lenses within its zoom range. i will shoot There's a lot of this coming over the next few weeks so we'll see how much I like it, but I can't imagine much has changed by then.

Pros
  • Good stuff
Cons
  • Expensive insurance
