Review on Tamron 20mm f/2.8 Di III OSD M1:2 Lens: Perfect for Sony Full Frame/APS-C E-Mount Camera Enthusiasts by Candace Parker

Revainrating 4 out of 5

The only salvation seems to be the optical quality and the close-up limit.

Update: I'm giving this lens a high rating because of the results I've been able to get with it. It's still not a premium build quality lens, my overall impression of the plastic is "eggshell", it buzzes at idle on your camera in manual focus mode, but it's very sharp even wide open and great for astrophotography and landscapes. Whatever its shortcomings, it's the end product that counts. - Initial Review - I wanted a 20mm lens for landscape photography and wanted to see how a $250-$300 Tamron would fare. I have other lenses that are more suitable for astro, so f2.8 was not decisive. But one after anonther. I had Tamron 17-28m, 70-300 and 70-180 from my friend. I was never really impressed. They have 3.5/5 optical performance, but the build quality leaves a lot to be desired and the autofocus isn't great for video. If you can't flick through autofocus (noisily) all the time, this lens might be for you. As it is, even in good light, this thing wanders back and forth and seems stuck for quite a while. I've been known to just switch to manual focus, but the focus ring is terrible. And back to build quality, like all Tamrons I've tried for mirrorless cameras, this focus ring is incredibly smooth. It feels like it could be broken very easily, and the wire fly response is one of the worst I've seen. I'll make sure it works for now but it just confirms that I need this Sony 20mm 1.8G. However, images come out sharp and without much HA or color fringing. F5.6-11 achieves maximum sharpness, which isn't bad at all. The minimum focus distance itself can be a reason to keep it even after an upgrade. One more thing, and this is a very personal matter, the front element (especially with the lens cap) appears to be much larger than a lens of this size should. there is something that makes it a bit difficult to get Tetris to work in my camera bag. I wouldn't hesitate to buy Tamrons in the future if only they could improve the build quality even if the price goes up a bit.
