Short range on single board computers

I have found that these sensors have a very short range. An object must be approximately 2 to 3 inches from the sensor before it is detected. I installed them on a small robot but found that the robot would bump into something before the sensor detected it. Also, the Python code was hard to come by and works fine while you're testing it, but not in actual use. The price was reasonable and one day I will need them.
