I may be doing it wrong, but it's pretty obvious

Colors don't really change from wet to dry unless other colors shimmer when wet. I've tested with high and low pH and the color doesn't change much and sometimes it doesn't even match the colors on the pH chart, some get lighter and darker and you can't find any color. burned my plants due to inaccurate readings, I ended up buying an $80 Hannah pH tester at a local store who calibrated it for me and have had no problems since.
