If you have bees, you need this!

I've had an apiary for several years. I've always wondered if there was a way to check moisture content in my honey. I've never had any of my honey ferment but I don't want to take a chance with such a precious resource. After some study, I leaned about refractometers. I assumed these would be pricey but was AMAZED that this one was so inexpensive! Shipment arrived three days after ordering. I had just harvested some honey and tested it after calibrating per the instructions that came with my…

Pros
  • much less than the bee supply stores for the same thing - I would recommend this
Cons
  • Expensive compared to other similar products in the market.

Works as advertised!

The refractometer feels solid, well built, and comes in a nice plastic hard case. My direction came in ChiThe refractometer feels solid, well built, and comes in a nice plastic hard case.I found the calibration was really easy and it came with a small screwdriver to make adjustments. I calibrated and tested a sample from extracted honey in a matter of 5 minutes.Good Product!

Pros
  • Seem to work good
Cons
  • The refractometer in the case was not he proper on. The label was correct on the case.

Easy to use, accurate, and a great price. Trifecta!

This product was spot on. If you don’t see the line, it’s because there’s not enough sugar in your sample. It came pre-calibrated, but I verified with Extra Virgin Olive Oil and an existing bottle of maple syrup from a local sugar shack. Spot on.It has saved me time and effort in my first year of sugaring my maples and is a great value and easy to use

Pros
  • Test honey. Easy to use
Cons
  • The device's storage requires a dry and steady temperature, which may not be available in everyone's home.

Unit would not calibrate properly.

Would not calibrate properly. Got a replacement and it also would not calibrate properly. Took it to a friend that was very familiar with refractometers and the problem seemed to lie with the alignment of the prism in such a way that the cover lens could not lie flat on the prism. Returned and requested a refund and ordered ebay’s choice refractometer and it calibrates and works fine. I suspect the first two I got that would not calibrate properly were from the same batch and most must work…

Pros
  • Works just like its supposed to. ;)
Cons
  • The device may make a mess during the testing process.

Works Great! best in my review

I purchased this to read the moisture content of honey from my bee hives. It's easy to use and accurate. That's my review.

Pros
  • So easy to use!!!
Cons
  • The device requires a lot of maintenance, which may be challenging for beginners.

Not a honey refractometer

Bought this because it seemed a well rated fairly inexpensive tool to check moisture in my honey, but the scale inside the refractometer is in Brix and specific gravity, not % moisture as was shown in the picture. Disappointed in the false advertising.

Pros
  • {}
Cons
  • The device may require regular maintenance to avoid deterioration.

Needs updated instructions

Instructions were wrong. It mentioned using distilled water and setting it to zero. There is no zero. Googled and found out to use olive oil to calibrate to 71.5. Once that was done. Voila. It just needs to have updated instructions.

Pros
  • Worked perfectly testing extracted honey. Easy to read, consistent tests. Great price too!
Cons
  • Product arrived used and covered in a sticky disgusting substance. I didn't get a chance to use it.

Easy to calibrate and use.

I now know with certainty that our honey is ready to package. Before I bought this refractometer, I was just guessing at the moisture content.

Pros
  • Easy to use. Well made.
Cons
  • The device is not easy to calibrate.

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Uncertain if it was worth the purchase or of its accuracy.

I never could figure out how to accurately calibrate the tool because the instructions were for a tool with more on it. I assume that I got it accurate enough by randomly guessing where numbers might be and I assume that my honey is good.

Pros
  • Great Value.
Cons
  • The instructions are not easy to understand for non-technical people.

Waste of money - my new review

Tried to calibrate with what I thought was the olive oil. Nothing happened saw no half and half screen, just indicator line that never moved even turning calibration screw. I doubt it was olive oil because it fused with the plastic of the device and melted it.Took this long to use because I waited for honey harvest to try. This was weird.

Pros
  • Very easy to use and calibrate.
Cons
  • The readings are only available in one scale, which is not ideal for international buyers.

Easy to use and as advertised

Received the product on time and as specified in the ad. The unit looks sturdy and is supplied in a good storage case. The refractometer was easy to calibrate with the supplied screw driver. Would buy again.

Pros
  • Well made and easy to use.
Cons
  • Only useful for individuals who regularly test honey's moisture and Brix levels.

Looks like it will work great

I got my delivery yesterday. The instrument looks well made and easy to use. The only draw back is the instructions to calibrate it. They said to use distilled water, however, that didn't seem to work. I ended up using Dave Cushman's instructions, using Virgin Olive Oil.Overall, I am pleased with the purchase.

Pros
  • No issues, works as expected. Fit and finish are that what I’d expect at this price point.
Cons
  • The device only works with honey and cannot be used for other substances.

Smelly substance taints measuring instrument

The product itself seems to work fine but it is shipped with a vial of foul smelling fluid. In response to a question, the company said it was olive oil to act as a test material. Smells more like some kind of rancid engine oil. Very difficult to clean away the smell!

Pros
  • SIMPLY USE: Using the dropper to take a sample of wort and put it on the prism. Then hold the refractometer up to the light and look scale through the eyepiece, more accurate to measure sugars in verities of melon, fruits or juice.
Cons
  • Not as accurate as other professional-grade refractometers on the market.

Not a honey refractometer

The refractometer received was for home brewing/wine making not for checking the sugar and water percentages of honey as described by the seller.

Pros
  • Good product.
Cons
  • The device's instruction manual is too technical and may confuse some users.

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Very easy to use, seems very accurate.

Very simple to use, I use this to ensure the honey I sell will not ferment. It takes all of 2-3 seconds to read. The only thing that is at all tricky, is that the reading is temperature sensitive. It must be read at environmental temperature of 68 degrees

Pros
  • Great price and the simplicity is perfect
Cons
  • May not work for very sticky, dense honey.

Good product - my new review

The item was neatly packed and delivered timely. It gives an accurate reading and is easy to easy and interpret results.

Pros
  • No zero to calibrate. The instructions is wrong. I can not use it.
Cons
  • The readings may fluctuate, making it hard to get consistent results.

Good product for the price

The instructions for calibration on this device were very clear and easy to follow. After calibration I took several tests from the same batch with the same reading.

Pros
  • super easy to use to measure water content of honey.
Cons
  • The needle may come out of calibration, leading to inaccurate readings.

Easy to use. Fast results

Very easy Refractometer to determine the moisture content of my honey. Very pleased with how easy it is to read and accurate way to determine if my honey is good to put into storage or needs further dehydration.

Pros
  • Industrial & Scientific
Cons
  • The device may be too delicate for outdoor use.

Perfect for beekeepers

This refractometer is easy to use and it's pre-calibrated. No complicated formulas to worry about. It's a must if you were going to sell your honey.

Pros
  • Very nice
Cons
  • The device's scale range may not suit the preferences of some customers.

Great tool: my feedback

This worked just like advertised. Simple and quick. Wish I had gotten it years ago. So easy, every beekeeper needs one at harvest time!

Pros
  • Very good instructions, easy to use
Cons
  • The device may require an additional power source, such as batteries.
