To large for normal 5/8 " hose

I destroyed the hose end trying to get one of these in a 5/8" hose. So I cut the hose again and kept trying. I wet it, oiled it, hit it with a hammer and it barely got on after many many tries. It was a highly time consuming and physical effort that I will not repeat. Looks like it might fit ok into a 3/4" hose but I have not tried that yet.
