My Golden Retriever had a hot spot on his neck about 1.5 inches from his ear. "Don't let him heal because he scratched him with his hind legs. At first we were reluctant to put an Elizabethan collar on him because the hot spot high on his neck wasn't where he could lick it anyway. And it seemed like he would most likely still be able to scratch that area. The vet shaved the area so the hair wouldn't interfere with the healing - this clearly helped, and the shaving revealed the hot spot was much larger, and words originally believed. She also prescribed oral antibiotics and steroids with no apparent benefit. Steroids caused him to drink a lot of water and even caused several "accidents" around the house overnight before bed. After a few weeks, the hot spot healed a bit, but he scratched it from time to time, disrupting the healing to the Cone of Shame , because the hot spot was high up on his throat anyway, not where he could lick it. And it looked like he could still scratch the spot. If you've ever had a dog wearing an Elizabethan collar, you know how annoying it can be for a dog to walk through even fairly narrow doors without the collar. All of the dog's normal activity is disrupted, and soon both the dog and owner begin to hate the "cone of shame." Because the inflatable collar is threaded through the dog's collar, it cannot be removed unless the dog puts on its normal collar. The velcro is not very strong, so it can sometimes come loose with normal use or by persuading the dog. We're retired, empty nesters, and our dog is almost always in sight or earshot of us. The included pump helped inflate the collar to the correct stiffness while it was in place rather than having to remove it to add or deflate air remove, and then replace it. I'm amazed that the collar case didn't get a lot of dog hair. If we don't use it next week we'll wash the cover and put away all the packaging until next time.
