They have a transparent body and are relatively easy to open for disassembly and filling. These are the two features that I felt were the most important. There is actually some sort of layer of glue on top of the threads, so separating it the first time is a bit frustrating and requires some effort. But all the mechanics are there and the blending ball seems to be a good weight so blending the color isn't as tiring as with some of the other pens I've used. I haven't actually emptied either one yet (these pens are thick so they have a lot of paint in them) so I don't really know, but I think the mixing ball is metal. And you can easily see when the color is fully mixed into the transparent barrel. The single sheet of plastic on each handle seemed redundant and unnecessary.
