Review on πŸŽ™οΈ Enhance Your Audio with Rode VideoMic NTG On-Camera Shotgun Microphone by Candy Malone

Revainrating 5 out of 5

This is a super versatile mic that works great with anything

I love this mic! Sounds good, low noise, very directional. Since I've had it, I've been using it for all my video conferences. I have it on the mic boom right above my head at 12-18 inches and it sounds very nice and clear. Allowed me to stop wearing headphones during conferences, I could only output the audio through the speakers. In addition, you can use the microphone as a USB device from a PC or connect an analog TRS or TRRS cable, it automatically detects the connection configuration, so you can use it with almost any device. I use it as a USB mic with my PC, in analog mode with a Sony A7R4, and have also used it as a USB-C mic with an iPad Pro and with an iPhone via an Apple analog adapter. Everything worked and had a great sound. The microphone's directivity allows you to place it off-camera slightly below or slightly above you and still get good audio. This isn't magic, however, because for the best quality with microphones, the rule is "the closer the better". You will likely get best results at 1-2 feet. If the person is speaking softly, try to get closer. There are a few minor bugs in USB mode. First, the gain control doesn't work in USB mode, you need to adjust the volume with PC software, which is not so convenient. Also, the safe channel feature doesn't work in USB mode (here normal audio is recorded on one channel and the other channel is 20dB quieter, so you can restore the audio in post if it suddenly gets too loud and cuts out) . . I don't know why they aren't working, but it would be great if Rode updated the firmware to fix the problem. The microphone is also expected to work with the iPhone via a USB-C to Lightning cable. I tried a good quality cable that I have and it didn't work. Rode support says you should use their UCB-C to Lightning cable. Not sure why that is, maybe they have some kind of active electronics in the cable. All I know is that I tried some good USB-C -> Lightning cables I had and they didn't work.
