Not everything is so portable

I don't know if the Sony RDP-XF100IP Portable Dock for iPod sounds "as good as Bose" or not. But it seriously lacks one of the advertised qualities: portability. .I bought this unit to use this summer while working as a fire station for the US Forest Service. Living on a mountain top pretty much means living "off the grid" - I have solar power, but no more. my batteries are up to 110VAC). I first tried this with a rectangular Wagan inverter and found that the dock would randomly switch functions if played while powered by the inverter. That means I was playing on the iPod and it suddenly switched to radio or line-in. I suspected it was because of a cheap inverter, so I bought a sine wave inverter (Xantrex PROwatt SW 600). This reduced the problem by about 50%, but it's still so troublesome that I can't start the unit while it's connected to the inverter. I need to charge the built-in battery while not playing and then play while the battery is dead. And that brings me to another downside: the battery. It's rated at 2000mAh and rated for less than 4 hours of playtime. To make matters worse, there doesn't seem to be any extra batteries to buy for this device. It would be far wiser to use an easily accessible battery pack or even better regular rechargeable AA NiMH batteries. It would make sense, but this is Sony. So I have an iPod dock that I can only use for a very limited time each day, assuming I remember to plug it in to charge the battery. The downsides of this product are that the status indicator is too dim to read in sunlight and the touch controls are too sensitive - if you accidentally touch them with your finger, you change the settings. I think this dock would work for someone who thinks "portable" means "you can carry it from one room in your house to another" and plans to use it almost exclusively when plugged in, but this is far from meeting my needs.
