I do some woodwork and some repairs on rental properties. There are very few "standard” models in these projects. This means working with fractions, which takes time and leads to errors. In the past I have experimented with using a standard tape measure (inches) on one side and a metric tape measure (cm) on the other side and then switching back and forth. This works well, but it's not the best option. Then I listened to an engineer talk about using the metric system in construction and woodworking projects. He said you only need to use millimeters (and meters if your project is big enough). He said you don't need intermediate measurements. In the project of the house use only mm. He went on to say that no country has actually switched to the metric system, which has attempted to base measurements on centimetres. So I bought this tape measure as an experiment and tried it out. He's right. You never have to measure less than 1 mm. You are always dealing with whole numbers - not fractions or even decimals. Measurement and math is very quick and easy. Even large numbers are not so uncomfortable. For example, 50 feet is 15,240 mm. Measurements and calculations are still fast, easy and accurate. This is the only millimeter tape I've been able to find at Revain (the rest are in centimeters). And the quality is pretty good, consistent with other tape measures I've used regularly. I think that thanks to the lecture and this tape measure I've finally switched to the metric system - except when I'm forced to use the standard system. Although duty-free, this volume has serifs every 16 inches, allowing you to work with standard sheet materials. That means you rarely have to switch to the standard band.
