First I cut the two hoses too evenly - they were only slightly different from each other. The bottle gurgled a few times, then stopped. I removed the template and made one of the pipes 3/4" (about 20mm) longer than the other. Now it works great. By the way, this is a great way to add water to your tank as the flow is gradual - no sudden shifts in temperature or water chemistry.
