A few years ago I bought a 60x lens for my phone and it had a 'cap' around it Lens to diffuse the light and evenly illuminate the subject. While the "cover" allowed the lens to be positioned a reasonable distance from the subject, it wasn't worth using as it still cast harsh shadows. I was fascinated by how the Apexel 100x had a ring light around the lens to evenly illuminate the subject. As can be seen in the photos, it illuminated the subject remarkably. These photos turned out pretty well for handheld shots, not a phone mounted on a tripod. You can even see the reflection of the ringlight on the "dew" droplets at the tips of the sundew leaf hairs. The 100mm microscope comes with a nice short cable to charge the built in battery for the light. It has a slider that slides off the lens and turns the light on automatically. You can then slide it back onto the lens to turn off the light. It's also designed to work with a phone case, at least one of the cases rising to roughly the height that the phone's lenses protrude from the phone. However, I wish it had a clip that is designed for, or could be tightened on, thinner cases. Still, I was able to take impressive close-up shots, as you can see in the photos I included in this review.
