I don't use them to keep my dog in the yard. You have an above ground pool and wanted to attach the winter tarp to the ground. Using a hand sander, cut out a small round eye. Then he just screwed these screw piles into the ground. Dig them deep enough that you can walk on the triangular shape without tripping or falling. Then I used 1/4 of the rope from the top of the triangle to the grommets of the winter tarp. Our ground here is a bit hard, not clayey, and further up there's a lot of pushing and running. About 30 of these are completely screwed into the ground around the pool, and only two have broken due to abuse and burying them completely. There were really only two breaks because there were a lot of rocks in the ground at those two spots and they were tightly packed and I was still trying to get them to keep screwing them deep into the ground. If you dress your dog up, they will work great. If I wasn't in a hurry to beat the sunset, is it really my fault that two of them broke in the first place? I could stop and use a pickaxe to smash the rock so the corkscrew would keep going until it was all the way down. But I only bought 48 and I knew, even though I was in a hurry to finish when the sun went down, that it really didn't matter if some of them broke from hitting hard rocks and using all my strength to finish drive them into the rocks anyway. . . I simply used a vise to clamp the broken end and unscrew it from the bottom and then place the other in the same spot and twist it until the top was flush with the bottom. They are sturdy and have a beautiful chrome finish. They don't have rust, but I get on the triangles almost every day and they can support my 200-pound body. As long as you have solid dirt in your backpack and screw it down deep enough, your Great Dane won't run away until your leash or rope breaks. I stuck the hammer in the triangle for extra leverage, flipped the hammer and applied all my brute force at about 400psi and only two broke due to the thick rock in the ground I was trying to break through. and to be honest i just removed the broken one and placed another one right in the same spot and went through the same process. I got the job done quickly. This should be more than adequate for pet needs.
