Good but may not be necessary - 2001 Highlander

I have changed my filter but it may not be needed. According to the instructions, the filter doesn't need to be changed, and you have to remove the bracket just above the oil pan to get to some of the bolts (i.e. loosen the three bolts and then lift the transmission a couple of inches so you can get to those bolts. I cleaned mine because my daughter complained about shifting and replaced it with fresh transmission fluid. Here's what I found if you haven't serviced your transmission in a while (or ever according to the manual), don't see my fluid dirty/dark when I took them out a sure sign of gearbox problems If you see this I suggest you don't change anything including the fluid, turns out the new fluid is basically a cleaning agent and will give you problems after it is changed there are many articles about it have a look but don't be like me the fluid changed and now the gearbox doesn't work well enough to drive in a few days.

Pros
  • Great for a small home
Cons
  • Questionable purchase for the elderly
