Review on Kuryakyn 4220 Motorcycle Accessory Tamper Proof by Mike Walters

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Do not use single ended/tamper resistant screws

Good product for the price, hard to find a place to mount that isn't near a hot engine or muffler. Pros = price, easy installation, nice chrome finish. Cons = DO NOT use tamper proof screws. You only get one chance to attach it to the bike, and when you finally use it, you'll have to use a "disposable screw extractor" (aka EXPENSIVE, a special screwdriver you'll most likely only use once) to extract it to remove or loosen them to adjust them. I used needle-lock pliers that worked to grab the screw heads and pull out just enough to loosen the rest by hand; but it ruins the screw heads and scratches the chrome on the lock. I went through many, many, many sites of reviews to find out that this model uses a 1" screw - #8-32 (there was no information in the specs, the manufacturer didn't know, and I knew that the lock was already installed), so make note of the screw size and buy a more reliable (or regular) stainless steel screw that can be adjusted without special tools. Let's face it, if someone really wants your helmet, they'll get it regardless of the bolts, as the latch isn't very "secure" to begin with. This prevents a common offender from getting away with your helmet.

Pros
  • Best in class
Cons
  • Mostly good but...
