This works very well for me. Here's my setup: I installed a heating pad on the bottom (outside) of a glass tank. I have a thermometer sensor in the tank under about a 1/2 inch layer of sand and Zilla Decor Rock Lair I have some dry moss inside the rock. I started each day with a slight rise in temperature until the temperature in the stone cave was warm to my hand. Now that it's installed, I'm not worried about anything other than looking at the readings from time to time. I could stick the thermometer probe into the rock, but I didn't want my leopard gecko messing with it, and I sometimes wet the moss so it has a wet skin. I hear the thermostat clicking from time to time to keep the temperature constant, but it doesn't really matter. The leopard gecko looks very happy and healthy, spending a lot of time in the rocks but going outside regularly.
