Accuracy Verified in tests, measurements and inspections

Overall this is an excellent product. Comfortable grip, the screen is backlit and the price can't be beat. An easy way to check the accuracy of this thermometer is to take the temperature of a pot of boiling water. This will give you a temperature of approximately 212 F. Equilibrium boiling water (or all liquids at the same temperature) will maintain 212 F no matter how quickly the water evaporates. This is a rough estimate because the boiling point of water varies with salinity and altitude. The thermometer I received read around 208-212 F. So how does that compare to the top model? I am an engineer and supply safety-related components for nuclear power plants. We use a $200 model that is calibrated by a separate vendor. Our calibration standard is 1.5°C, which corresponds to a lower tolerance limit of 209.3°F. Therefore, this thermometer is NOT suitable for the qualification of safety-relevant components in nuclear power plants. Unless you're not trying to qualify safety-related components. In practice, they are used for quick, general measurement of the temperature of a liquid or for determining heat loss. I wouldn't expect many people to use them to get accurate temperatures. I've used this in my home to determine which rooms are cooler than others, drafts around doors or windows, and leaks in the HVAC system. A very solid product and definitely accurate.
