One of the Best Modern Westerns

Almost any fan of the genre will tell you that there are three or four great modern westerns out there. They are all made in the late 80's, early 90's, starting in 1985 with the Silverado. Tombstone and Unforgiven are also on the list. Often forgotten or overlooked, the fourth film is Quigley Downstairs. The casting for this film, starting with Tom Selleck starring Matthew Quigley, is outstanding. All wires are ideal for spares. Laura San Giacomo and Alan Rickman are the only other leads; both become a memorable work that helps to realize very distinctive and interesting characters. The rest of the cast, mostly former henchmen or random townspeople, are mostly unknown or possibly local talent. Only one or two stand out, but you can't fault their performance either. The natives who appear in this film are just amazing. I always wonder how they were chosen and filmed. The personality and charm of these people can be seen in the film, although none of them speaks a word of English (or anything). As with everything else in this film, the natives play a key role in making everything work; It wouldn't be as good without her. The setting is great and the cinematography takes full advantage of that fact. Similar to or with the Aborigines, the Australian outback is a central character throughout the film. The plot and how events unfold to an almost inevitable conclusion is fairly predictable and hardly original. But you won't care. All with a sense of humor driven by fully drawn characters. The ability to laugh a little in the midst of very tough events is amazing. It's a very fine line, but Simon Winser (director) walks it skillfully. It's really wonderful. I highly recommend this movie. This is the best thing Tom Selleck has ever done on the big screen. If you like westerns and have a liking for Australia in general, this movie could be perfect for you. Oh, who am I kidding? you've already seen it!
