Review on πŸ“» Tecsun PL330 AM/FM/LW/SW Worldband Digital Radio with SSB Receiver by Doug Mancilla

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Great and bad, but got what I expected.

I looked at a lot of reviews so I had an idea of what I was going to get. This is my review after 15 minutes with it so I haven't had a chance to try the DXing MW or SW or use it at night or outside of my basement. GREAT: I just wasn't sure because I had never heard of it. All reviews have mentioned how good the selectivity and gum resistance is. I live less than a mile from a radio tower with two VHF radios that drown out most of the receivers on my property on every VHF band and even some UHF radios. These two stations compete with each other and spread across the entire FM band on most radio stations, but in this case they are not. I was able to catch another station 40 miles away in my basement with a thick cement wall and dirt blocking my line of sight while the tower that was bleeding was right in front of my exit and in line of sight. This is one of the most sensitive and selective receivers I own and is on par with more expensive devices. I would say this radio is worth it but I wish the tuning knob was better. THE BAD: As expected, the volume controls and VFOs feel cheap and wear out with heavy use. It's not much fun tuning it by band, but the ETM auto-memory feature is nice. Other Notes: I ordered a case that goes well with it, along with accessories. Revain Basics 5" GPS Hardshell Travel Case, Black (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004I5BUSO). Possibly the smallest SW receiver I've ever owned. I've had several Grundig Radio Shack radios and this one is much more portable I could put it in the front pocket of my jeans (no case) I wanted a PL-990 but stopped there I think this one will do the job and being smaller is really nice I will probably use this more than a bulky radio.

Pros
  • Very impressive
Cons
  • boring packaging
