The device requires a special cut out in your door. After installation we found that the product was of extremely poor quality and the locking mechanism was completely unusable. The castle's small ledge is incredibly difficult to turn. I have strong fingers and luckily I checked the lock while my wife was home because after locking the lock I couldn't press the small tab enough to get it open. The woman had to get down and use the flat head on the other side to pull me out. I would love to return it and choose a different option but now my door is cut out for this lock. I have to buy a new door. I guess we'll just live with a bathroom door that can't be locked.
