RT28 Radio - UHFI I'm a radio amateur (K6WGX) who bought some of these to play with. They are pre-programmed with FRS frequencies (see diagram) that have Tone Coded Squelch enabled. I erased them and simply programmed FRS channels 1-16 to use FRS. They work great for me. The sound is not outstanding, but readable. The range is okay if you set the squelch to about 1. I like the USB charging port built into the radio. If you are unsure about programming them yourself, consult some local radio amateurs. You need a programming cable. Apparently this is the FCC type approved for use as FRS radios. Out of the box, these are serviceable radios. "Acoustic" headphones have not tried. I don't recommend them. These are basically children's toys with some seriously advanced features. I was fortunate to live in an area that has ham radio repeaters. I programmed one of these into several local UHF repeaters and was pleasantly surprised with the results. On a five-mile UHF repeater, this block was perfectly readable. At a distance of fifteen miles from the repeater at the top of the mountain, this device was "scratchy" but readable. This could be an acceptable (very) cheap emergency radio. For the price, I agree with the RT28. ;) I have not received any compensation for this review.
