Long review but felt it needed. I ordered 2 Medium Eco Bio Block Stones on 2/22/17 I have a 300 gallon cichlid tank. Had cichlids over 20 years old. 2 excellent external filters. I've always had good tank maintenance. Even with good water circulation and properly planned tank management, after about 3-5 days I was sitting there thinking "I wish I could change the polishing padsβ but like most things in life it was on my priority list and they got replaced during the normal one filter maintenance. This has been a constant phenomenon for many years. I enjoyed enjoying freshly made water that was crystal clear for 3-5 days after scheduled maintenance. But the really beautiful clarity faded too quickly. Little did I know that this would be the least of my problems to come. Unfortunately, my water well has since failed and has VERY high nitrate levels. 160 ppm or possibly even more. So sad! I'm grateful that the fish are acclimatizing and mine have done incredibly well, but I can't buy new fish or give them to other aquariums because of the harsh chemistry. Water changes actually tend to increase my nitrate levels. I can give my kids bottled water and protect my family, but a 300-gallon freshwater tank makes things harder. new well) for my fish that I had for years and didn't want to lose. PLEASE DO NOT USE THIS AS AN OPEN DOOR TO Criticize ME OR MY PRACTICE. This novel is meant to help someone who may be in the same situation as me. There is no product that will help against the high nitrates that are already in your proposed water supply. Of course they have to be balanced. Anyone who has had freshwater fish for years and is doing great and then suddenly. You notice that the new fish do not thrive and usually die. Check your water. You may be happy with your installed system, and variables MAY change without your knowledge. Now my rating. I just wanted to help anyone who really wants to know how these things work. I wanted to share a little bit about my story so I can give my point of view. I did a test run in a water jug with an air stone under eco-bio stones. I used water from an established aquarium and checked the nitrate and pH levels for each water sample about every 12 hours. I wanted to measure the efficiency accurately. Within 48 hours the pH in the jug was off the charts! I expected this, so I'm warning you. You need to remember the nitrate chemistry, pH, and hardness balance. It was a gradual process, with no sudden outbursts. However, I was shocked to find that my nitrates dropped to 40ppm within 48 hours! Remember I started at 160ppm and maybe even higher. I was surprised! Now, just two weeks later, my water is amazing! It looked like I changed pads every day! I love it! Unfortunately, my nitrates are the same, but given the size of my tank, I don't think that's a surprise. The information sheet actually says 2-4 weeks. Not to mention that if my fish suddenly dwindled and my water chemistry changed dramatically, they certainly wouldn't fare well. I am completely satisfied with the results and the transparency is incredible even without the nitrate content! So I strongly recommend buying these stones! In fact, I've just bought two more Medium Stones for my aquarium and a Small Stone for my son's small goldfish tank!
