My Three Bulb Roundup

So, let's repeat it again: a black light bulb shouldn't brighten a room or provide ambient light. The light from a perfect black light would actually be invisible, emitting only ultraviolet frequencies that the human eye cannot see. However, some paints and materials fluoresce under ultraviolet light, making blacklights both useful and fun. I bought 3 bulbs for comparison: ItUP black light blue LED UV lamp Sunlite LED UV 2W A19 black light blue lamp with E26 medium base Sunlite 20 watts and only heat slightly. Sunlite's CFL bulb is larger than a standard bulb and warm to the touch, so it may not be suitable for a tight fixture. The response to fluorescent light from each lamp was about the same. However, they differed greatly in the amount of visible light. The Sunlite LED offering was the cleanest, producing a deep enough bluish atmosphere to read. (Reading under a UV lamp is definitely not recommended!) The Sunlite CFL lamp also performed well and was only slightly brighter. The Light ItUp lamp was poor in comparison, emitting a lot of light in an odd and unattractive light blue hue. A "black light" lamp needs to filter out visible frequencies and illuminate only UV, and this lamp was significantly worse at that. All in all, I would recommend the Sunlite CFL version as a "party lamp". For the purest UV response, use a Sunlite LED lamp.
