I read the reviews before purchasing this item. Many reviews helped me, but they contradicted each other. I needed a call for my Yorkie who is a small dog. Its bell isn't too big, but it had to be adjusted to suit my personal needs. In my opinion, this call is too loud for my taste. He's really built to be used as a hunting dog in the field so you can keep up with them. I use a bell every day to keep up with my naughty Yorkie so I know when he's getting into things he doesn't need to be doing. It is also necessary so that I do not step on it when walking. To modify the bell to not be as loud, I crushed all four sides with pliers to make it smaller. By reducing it, we reduced the volume and frequency of the sound. Before I bought this bell I had a cat bell that was perfect but my dog kept chewing on it. This bell is very durable. My dog chews on it but it can't hurt him as it's very well made. I know it's a little weird when a dog uses metal as a chew toy; Find out. The other setup I had to do was cut the black strap and attach the bell directly to the collar. The black strap made the bell yearn for my short little Yorkshire. In summary, this bell is designed for a hunting dog, but can be adjusted to suit your personal needs.
