Our house has radiators that are almost 100 years old and original steam pipes. I was told that the one furthest from the cauldron would always be "louder" than the others; but the constant hissing, which was more of a "Shhhhhhh" necessitating turning on the speakers, was very annoying. One of my old vents (about 2 years old and looks the same as the $6 vents) failed and I decided to replace it with one of these. No noise - nothing! Wonderful! So I ordered 2 more for another "noisy" radiator (we have "ends") and one that recently started making noise. Now - the whole house is quiet and even the heating turns on/off less! So not only am I quieter, but I also save some money on my energy bills! Tip: It may take a few tries to figure out where to "start" with screwing in the vent, but after a bit of experimenting, it worked out fine. If you have a few drips try reinstalling with some more teflon tape over it - works like a charm - each radiator has its own personality.
