For comparison I have been a keen road cyclist for 10 years and did a lot of mountain biking in my youth. I'm not a pro and don't race professionally, but I've definitely had my fair share of helmets over the years. As my son got older and wanted to ride in the new van or iBert seat I bought, I was dying to get him a good helmet. I did a lot of research on Revain, visited the sporting authority and checked a few bike shops. I have to admit that at first they all looked the same and I was more concerned about whether I liked the color or not. There are some pretty cool designs out there. But then I started reading more and asked my son to try them on. That's when the differences became clear. Size - The helmet should be somewhat proportional to your child's head size. Let's face it, kids don't wear helmets, so don't want it to be something bulky. Many of the helmets I looked at used one-size-fits-all helmets, regardless of your child's age. The size or diameter inside varies, but the outside dimensions remain the same from infant to 5 years of age. My son is 17 months old. Some of those helmets seemed huge on his head and bothered him more than others. Joovy was perfect. Fit โ Obviously, fit is very important for comfort and safety. If I were looking for a helmet for myself I would look for adjustability, padding where needed and a comfortable chin strap with 4 helmet contact points. Many other helmets lacked one or all of these features, or more expensive models simply cost more than they should. Joovy had all these features. Adjustability and fit were excellent. On the back there is an adjustment dial for tightening or loosening, a padded chin strap, 4 contact points, extra padding, etc. It wraps around his head and doesn't lean forward or backward like some helmets do. Note. Be sure to measure your child's head. This is adjustable by a few inches, but you must be within the specified range. Coverage - This helmet has full coverage that goes to the back of the head and really covers to the base of the skull. I like a little extra lighting. Ventilation - for obvious reasons. If your child is hot and sweaty, they will feel uncomfortable or comfortable around them. Safety: The material of the outer shell and the inner material is identical to that of my fashionable road bike helmets. Visor - My wife is crazy about sunscreen and my son never leaves the house without sunscreen. If she had her way, my son would wear sunglasses every time he was outside. A visor is good because it helps protect your face from the sun. Because it's a heavy-duty visor, and not just the plastic visor you see on mountain bike helmets, it offers extra protection. We bought neon green. It's not the most stylish per se, but it can't be overlooked. It's also gender neutral so hopefully we'll get a few uses for this helmet after my son outgrows it. I wish they had other sizes so I can keep buying their products as he gets older.
