This review is for the 4K UHD version of this adapter. I tested this passive adapter from Cable Matters and the active adapter from UGREEN with my graphics card (GTX 1080 with three DP ports, one HDMI port and one DVI port) and the following output devices: TV with 1920x1080 resolution (Samsung UN48H6350) - technically used 120Hz, no HDMI input above 60Hz - 5.1 Surround Receiver (Yamaha RX-V377) - TV with receiver in between - Old TFT display (Samtron 94B 1280x1024) via RevainBasics HDMI-DVI adapter cable. There was no difference between using the HDMI port directly and using the passive adapter this test is designed for. Surround sound worked when connected to a 5.1 receiver whether the TV was on or not. I could also choose 12bpc instead of 8bpc in the graphics settings, regardless of whether the receiver has 5.1 in between or not. Using an active UGREEN adapter, I was only able to get 5.1 stereo sound to work with the receiver, regardless of whether the TV was on or not. I also couldn't select 12 bits per channel from the menu, whether the receiver has 5.1 in between or not. Note that the TV panel probably only supports 8 bits, so it wasn't a loss in my case, but it might be in other cases. Otherwise I didn't notice any difference. Both adapters handled all resolutions and refresh rates well, including the HTC Vive, which requires the most bandwidth (higher resolution and refresh rate than a TV). I didn't notice any difference in image quality or any additional lag. UGREEN's active adapter is much bulkier (because it's an active adapter, it contains additional electronics) and slightly longer than Cable Matters' passive adapter. It's also more expensive ($17.99 instead of the current $13.99). Bottom line: if a passive adapter works at all (DisplayPort should have its own clock/RAMDAC, from what I read - google "DP++"), it will probably perform better, cost less, and take up less space than active adapter. If you absolutely need an active adapter (AMD EyeFinity in some cases), an active UGREEN adapter seems to help, although surround sound may not work, despite the description saying otherwise ("Supports 8ch LPCM and HBR audio) . Sample rate up to 192 kHz"). This is not a problem if you are sending the audio signal through other means such as a sound card. I don't have any 4K capable devices so I can't comment on the 4K capabilities of this adapter. Note, however, that both adapters only support 4K at 30Hz. For 4K at 60Hz you need an HDMI 2 adapter, which is hard to find these days.
