Review on Sony SELP1650 16 50Mm Power Zoom by Indal Singh ᠌

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Best thing for the money, glad I did it.

I had experience using many lenses (including kit lenses) from Canon and Nikon, and I can say about the subject that this is the best budget kit lens I've ever seen. I emphasize - from whales. I will compare with them, because as for the picture, everything here is standard for a whale. First of all, compared to analogues, the lens is ultra-compact and the focal length is changed using a motor. It works exceptionally quickly - it switches from extreme to extreme position in a split second. Focusing (on the a6000) is also quite fast (albeit slightly slower than the SEL-1670Z, which is not surprising given the sixfold difference in price). The picture quality is quite acceptable for an amateur inexperienced with expensive lenses at all focal lengths. After buying the mentioned SEL-1670Z, it would seem that the need for a whale zoom should disappear, but given its compactness (it fits with a camera in a pocket of a winter jacket), I decided to leave it. And, finally, the main thing, in my opinion, is the quality of the subject - shooting a video. With its fast yet smooth electric zoom, the 1650 is the most comfortable video lens of any nex optic. Of course, it cannot shoot a highly artistic video due to mediocre aperture, but for shooting on the run, for example, on a tour, or at a children's matinee, it is indispensable. In general, I definitely recommend to buy. The lens will not gather dust on the shelf even if you buy a set of expensive optics.

Pros
  • compact (for its focal lengths), sharp in the center (for a whale), very fast zoom (for electronic), effective stub, good for video, quality materials and assembly, looks perfect with the new nex, a5000 and a6000 cameras, a lot of "sony style"
Cons
  • all the shortcomings of whale lenses - dark, sharpness at the edges drops sharply, a "flat" picture without a hint of artistry
