Review on πŸš— CHGeek Magnetic Wireless Car Charger: 15W Qi Car Phone Mount for iPhone 12 Series by Glenn Cartwright

Revainrating 3 out of 5

No 15w car accessory charger

When I opened the box I was surprised to see that it came with a USB-C to USB-A cable. The reason for my surprise was that USB-A isn't rated for charging more than 5W (with a few exceptions that don't apply here), which immediately made me skeptical that it's actually a MagSafe-rated charger. 15W like all Use USB-C PD that only works with USB-C Power Delivery charger. After hooking it up to my charge speed meter, my suspicions were confirmed. With the cable that came with it, I was able to get the standard 5 watt charge. After swapping the cable for a USB-C to USB-C cable and plugging it into a 35W USB PD charger, I was able to get it to 7.0W, but nowhere near 15. Now It's important to mention that even Apple's MagSafe chargers rarely reach 15W charging power in real use. It depends on many factors such as battery heating, battery draining, etc. So as a benchmark, I immediately connected the official MagSafe charger to the phone , after taking the readings above, and got a charging speed of 9W, which is faster than I've ever seen this charger. MagSafe 15W charging requires MagSafe OEM certification. Apple's MFI program, while there are no lower speeds. This charger is not certifiable. While it's entirely possible that the hardware can be charged at 15W, this never shows up on an iPhone. With that removed, the rest of the device is a joy to use. It snaps in very well and has a foot to keep the vent from pulling down. It also has a strong magnet that never drops my iPhone Pro Max (the heaviest version) even in my SUV. I don't recommend it because you're probably doing things like music, navigation and phone calls in the car. All use a lot of power, which this charger cannot supply. With an overnight charger, I don't care how fast it charges if it's empty in the morning, but travel time does matter.

Pros
  • Lots of good vibes
Cons
  • Minor issues
